Description[edit]
'Andre Louis Hicks (July 5, 1970 – November 1, 2004), better known by his stage name Mac Dre, was an American rapper, hip hop pioneer, and record producer based in Vallejo, California.[1][2] ' Mac Dre was a convicted criminal, and the article pretty much documents that. Moreover, he was based in both Vallejo and Sacramento according to the article sources. I would suggest adding 'convicted felon' to his summary and add Sacramento to his 'based in'. Expansion[edit]
It would be great if we add some information about his career, such as hit singles collaborations, discography, death, etc.. Some background information about the events which inspire some of his songs (such as Romper Room robbery incident) would help as well. --LBMixPro(Speak on it!) July 2, 2005 09:25 (UTC)
- Hear hear. I added a bunch of stuff and fixed some facts, and will try to do some polishing later (links, more elegant sentences/paragraphs, etc). Also, I think something of his friendship and links to other bay area rappers and producers should be noted, though this stuff is harder to root out (I'm thinking of his friendships and beefs with people like Mac Mall, 90's producer Khayree) - not too much, but just a little of the confirmable details. --Clapaucius 00:54, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
- He did have a beef with mac mall but they 'squashed' it there beef that's why they came out with the U.S. OPEN.
Tupac recorded with ray luv and young lay and they threw a mac dre verse on there..tupac was on that track to begin with not recorded outside the bay.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.48.78.93 (talk) 13:25, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
In addition to what was stated, How many recorded albums were sold as part of Mac Dre's history as a Rap artist/producer., is unclear. The Rompalation, was a huge success, well as Rapper Gone Bad, Stupid Doo Doo Dum, Mac Dre, the Name, earlier albums YBB, Whats Really Going On?, and Back in Da Hood. Future albums Al Boo Boo, Genie of Da Lamp, Pill Clinton, Judge Mathis, Mac Dre 4th Of July, and close ties with successful bay area rappers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.253.96.107 (talk) 14:24, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Philanthropist[edit]
Was Mac Dre a philanthropist? A casual Google didn't confirm that he is. jareha 17:47, 17 November 2005 (UTC)Mac dre was not a philanthropist thoe he did help a lot of people get their rap careers off the ground.
some other rappers have called him a philanthropist, that is all.Drumac 04:18, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
It's really an opinion. i think he was because he did spend time & money to help young rappers get in the game with his label company.his reputation to help others outphilanthropist may not always find universal approval for his/her deeds. Common accusations include supporting an unworthy cause or having selfish motivation at heart —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.149.149.235 (talk) 01:29, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- a record label owner helping artists get into the business by providing time and money is not philanthropy. its business. he financially benefitted from their success, which is as it should be. its good business practice to cultivate talent that can be then promoted by your company, but its not philanthropy.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 19:37, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Gansta or Hyphy Rapper?[edit]
I contend that Mac Dre is now bettern known as a hyphy rapper.. a change that was reverted [1] by User:Khoikhoi. Does anyone else have thoughts on this one way or another? -- Joebeone (Talk) 21:40, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
- 'I know, doe ray me /But no I'm not a R&B sanger / I'm a gangster rapper throwin' the middle fanger / To them square rubix cubes, who don't smoke and use / I'm a cutthoat boy and I got a short fuse / I get kind of hyphy when I'm gone off a little Gin' - Boss Tycoon (2002). I would say that he's both? I don't think Hyphy was as much of a genre then as it is now apparently. But I don't think he should be excluded from on or the other personaly. -- Carlos 17:52, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
I don't think mac dre was a gangsta rapper. Just because he used the term in his rap doesn't make him one. Watch Treal tv. His associates have even said in interviews that he wasn't a street rapper, like some of them are. He was more about macking beezies and writing dope raps.'I'm from the V-a-double l-e-j-o and making dope raps is all i know'153.18.17.22 18:46, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
First and foremost he is a gangsta rapper, listen to Mac Dre's music from 1988 to 2000 and tell me otherwise, the last six years Dre started getting more money and was partying all the time. This was the influence for his new party sound. But listen to the song 'Hy Phy' from 2001 with Keak da Sneak and PSD, his verse on that isn't about GHOSTRIDING or even DANCING, its about fucking people up. He didn't specifically try to make hyphy music, he made music to party to, I find it a lot different from the modern hyphy music. Of course Dre (or his death rather) was a huge influence for the modern hyphy scene but we must realize his subject matter was almost strictly gangsta/pimp
I think Mac Dre was a gangsta rapper turned go dumb rapper, and I believe a subgenre called Thizz should be created on this site, as alot of Mac Dre and his labels music produced more club friendly beats than the uptempo hyphy beats and werent concentrated around the drum pattern, resembling more of an offshoot of the Mobb Music. Yet I think Thizz music was really a new type of genre in the bay and because of Mac Dre's death was not able to spring out onto the mainstream like Hyphy has.
Um..Thizz music is the same as hyphy music. If Mac Dre were still alive he would still be making those kinds of songs. Its just other rappers ran with it and now their music is called hyphy. Also, Mac Dre did talk about violence in his songs (like most rappers) but whenever he did it was in a comical way. In 'Hy Phy' he talks about being so ripped that he misses 2 times with a punch and choosing the dark side. I would consider him primarily a hyphy rapper. I mean, in the first part of his career before he went to jail he was pretty much a straightfoward rapper, but he changed after stupid doo doo dumb, the album which defined him as a rapper. I consider him the ultimate example of a hyphy artist regardless of how the movement changes.
And what do you mean his subject matter was strictly gangsta/pimp? He was talking about ghostriding the whip, gettin stupid, going dumb, yoking and all that before any of the artists now.
^^ Thats what he did most of his career. from Young Black Brotha to The Game is Thick 2 he was rapping about macking and being a gangsta. of course he rapped about that too but thats not what his career as a whole was based on
Mac Dre might have talked about being a gangster, hell he might have even been one, but he was not a gangster rapper, he just talked about drugs and being a boss. But gangster rap is more about the streets and murdering people and thier beats are faster than hyphy music. Mac Dre might have wanted to be a gangster rapper, but sadly he wasn't well not at least when his carrer ended, be was more gangster at the begining of his carrer but as rapping skills declined, his gangster-ness did too.
He in alot of peoples minds put hyphy music in the rap game. but he was also a gangsta rapper since he talked about 'gangster' stuff. so i think ther is no or . but simply an and —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.149.149.235 (talk) 01:17, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
Damn, you guys gotta realize that there's no line drawn between these genres exactly. You can't classify a musician in one genre if he defined a genre by combining his influences. The fact is that Andre Hicks was a hustler, and a pimp. In 'Not My Job' he still refers to himself as a PIMP/rapper. He came out of the streets by rapping about his life while he was in the middle of them. It's fair to say that Ice Cube is no longer that much of a gangster while he makes movies like 'Are we there yet?', but he started his career with 'Straight outta Compton'! Mac Dre was always a thug, but after he did a five year bid he went more in the direction of music, and rightfully so. He was a gangster, and a rapper, he became hyphy when he started poppin', and defined the genre with the music he began putting out. I consider myself to be a partially hyphy rapper because of Dre's influence, but I would never say that I'm in the same genre as Mac Dre, because he was a gangster, and I'm not. His subject matter reflects a gang lifestyle and mentality that he was born into. He was a hyphy, gangster rappin', pimpin', hustlin' cut throat. Period. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.42.81.228 (talk) 20:26, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
He was a gangster rapper..the song 'Romped Out Norteno'...lyric: This the smash, cut thoats in X4, frisco, vallejo, romped out norteno.. see what im sayin? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.241.26.92 (talk) 08:55, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Aliases[edit]
you should only include something as an alias if hes called himself that more than once. lots of rappers call themselves things, it doesn't mean thats their nickname.
- Are aliases encyclopedic? That is, I'm not sure this is the place to enumerate aliases, no? -- Joebeone (Talk) 18:23, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
E-40s section has a list of aliases. I don't see why not.
- Consider signing your entries in Talk pages. Just because e-40's page has it, that doesn't mean that Mac Dre's article should have it. What I'm asking is if you opened up an encyclopedia entry on Mac Dre, would a list of his aliases be a central part of it? I don't think so, what do you think? -- Joebeone (Talk)
yes, but then again wikipedia has a lot of stuff that other encyclopedia's don't68.164.81.33 04:29, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
I believe all that really matters is if you like the music. A pile of crap can make a good song. A good artist can make a stupid song. I don't like listening to all his stuff. I'm sure there are things about his life I wouldn't think were good. But who cares. Some of his stuff is pretty good. Did he mean for people to sit around and philosophize about him or just listen?
Street Sampras really isn't one of his alias', also how can someone 'forget' Ronald Dregan or The Genie of the Lamp or The Rapper Gone Bad. I don't see why this page is protected, could do with a few facts cleared up !JakeAKAmd 08:15, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Fix this article[edit]
Someone needs to rewrite this article. It was way better before. I love Dre as much as anyone but its a wikipedia and it shouldn't read 'the undisputed creator of hyphy'. Also, the list of rappers he has worked with is way too long. It should contain about 5 names but it lists about 2064.105.34.59 (talk) 07:50, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
Wrong Link[edit]
The link to the Romper Room, goes to a page about a children's television show. I don't think he spent four years in prison for being associated with Mr. Rogers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.213.187.110 (talk) 01:30, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
- The gang was indeed named after the children's show. RichFarmbrough, 03:41, 30 October 2012 (UTC).
Artist Additions and Biography Edit[edit]
I've increased the list of rappers associated with Mac Dre. Including Dubee, Mistah Fab, Rydah J. Klyde, Richie Rich(rapper), and Lil Ric. Also deleted Baby Bash, Ray Luv, and Suga Free because these artists never made albums together. I have also added more information about Mac Dre's past life.Alra420 (talk) 17:59, 1 December 2010 (UTC)Alra420

Poor formatting / rewrite needed[edit]
Mac Dre Mac Stabber Download Pc
This article about Mac Dre is poorly formatted to objectively describe Andre's life and career to the fullest extent. His life was more than simply 'Early Life, Prison, Post Prison, and Death,' and formatting needs attention. A rewrite with the generic artist template of 'Early Life, Career, Other Ventures, Personal Life, Legal issues, and death would portray Andre Hicks more accurately. Also, the writing in this article includes quotes from songs which should be excluded from the final version of this wiki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CleanStamped (talk • contribs) 15:48, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
